Are you having one of those days? Maybe you got bad news, or someone hurt your feelings, or just feeling blah, like nothing goes your way. Everyone has their ups and downs, but as believers we should learn to be thankful for all Allah's (swt) blessings and look at the positives.
- Remember what you are blessed with. We have become accustomed to having what we want, when we want it. When something interrupts that pattern we don't take it well. Look around at all Allah (swt) has given you. Not only the material things, but the things we need most that we tend to take for granted (religion, family, peace, health). Can you imagine life without these?
- Take a moment to compare yourself to those less fortunate. We are always quick to notice when a peer has something we don't, like name brand clothing, the newest electronics, or even a bigger family than ours. How often do you think the reverse though? When was the last time you said Alhamdulillah, when you saw someone less fortunate, an orphan, an only child, or someone who doesn't have the latest gadgets you have. Your blessings are more than your complaints if you just take an honest look. Make it a new habit to thank Allah(swt) for something you do have every time you think of something you don't have.
- Write down the problem or draw a picture describing your feelings. Visualizing the issue on paper may help to clear your thoughts and allow you to come up with a solution or a way to help. For example: If your friend did something that hurt your feelings, you could right down the positive and negative things they have done to/for you in the past. If this person has always been there for you, maybe a little reminder is all you needed to realize they may not have hurt you intentionally.
- Recall the story of Prophet Ayoub (as). He suffered for years and went through more than we could ever imagine, but was still thankful to Allah for His blessings and was patient. Try to read the stories of the prophets often as they serve as a reminder and an example in our lives.
Next time you find yourself feeling down, ask Allah (swt) for guidance and try these tips. After all it is JUST one of those days and soon InshaAllah, things will be looking better.
